NIGERIA has won her first medal of the ongoing International Amateur
Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Athletics Championships currently taking
place in Moscow after Blessing Okagbare clinched silver in the women's long
jump. This will be Nigeria’s first Athletics medal after a long long time…we
hope it’s a start to a new era.
Okagbare, 24 jumped a distance of 6.99 metres, just two centimetres short of
the 7.01 metres that American Brittney Reese lept to clinch gold. Indeed,
Okagbare did start off the better of the two, initially jumping 9.66 metres to
lead the field and it was not until the second round that the American managed
to come back.
